XSLT <xsl:value-of> Element
Definition and Usage
The <xsl:value-of> element extracts the value of a selected node.
The <xsl:value-of> element is used to select the value of an XML element, and output it.
Syntax
<xsl:value-of select="expression" disable-output-escaping="yes|no" />
Attributes
| Attribute | Value | Description |
|---|---|---|
| select | expression | Required. An XPath expression that specifies which node/attribute to extract the value from. It works similarly to navigating a file system by selecting subdirectories with a forward slash (/). |
| disable-output-escaping | yes no |
Optional. If set to "yes", text nodes generated by instantiating the <xsl:text> element will not be escaped in the output. For example, "<" will be output as "<". If set to "no", "<" will be output as "<". Default is "no". |
Examples
The following example gets the value of the first title and artist elements, and places them in a table:
Example 1
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?> <xsl:stylesheet version="1.0" xmlns:xsl="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform"> <xsl:template match="/"> <html> <body> <h1>Music Collection:</h1> <table border="1"> <tr bgcolor="#9acd32"> <th>Title</th> <th>Artist</th> </tr> <tr> <td><xsl:value-of select="catalog/cd/title" /></td> <td><xsl:value-of select="catalog/cd/artist" /></td> </tr> </table> </body> </html> </xsl:template> </xsl:stylesheet>
The following example loops through each cd element, and creates a table row with the values of the title and artist elements for each cd element:
Example 2
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?> <xsl:stylesheet version="1.0" xmlns:xsl="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform"> <xsl:template match="/"> <html> <body> <h1>Music Collection:</h1> <table border="1"> <tr bgcolor="#9acd32"> <th>Title</th> <th>Artist</th> </tr> <xsl:for-each select="catalog/cd"> <tr> <td><xsl:value-of select="title" /></td> <td><xsl:value-of select="artist" /></td> </tr> </xsl:for-each> </table> </body> </html> </xsl:template> </xsl:stylesheet>
