Att Track Kind
Att Track Kind
π 2026-06-14 | π HTML
## HTML `
` `kind` Attribute The `kind` attribute of the `
` element specifies the type of text track being loaded. It tells the browser how to interpret and display the timed text file (such as a WebVTT file) associated with a `
` or `
` element. --- ## Syntax ```html
``` --- ## Attribute Values The `kind` attribute accepts one of the following five keyword values. If the attribute is omitted, the default value is `subtitles`. | Value | Description | Use Case | | :--- | :--- | :--- | | `subtitles` | **Subtitles (Default)**. Provides transcription or translation of the dialogue. Suitable for users who do not understand the language spoken in the media. | Translating foreign language dialogue. | | `captions` | **Closed Captions**. Provides transcription of dialogue, sound effects, music cues, and other relevant audio information. Suitable for deaf or hard-of-hearing users, or when the video is muted. | Transcribing dialogue along with cues like `` or ``. | | `descriptions` | **Audio Descriptions**. A textual description of the video's visual content. This can be read aloud by a screen reader or synthesized into speech for visually impaired users. | Describing visual actions, facial expressions, or scene changes. | | `chapters` | **Chapter Titles**. Defines chapter titles intended to help the user navigate the media resource. | Creating an interactive table of contents or navigation menu for long videos. | | `metadata` | **Metadata**. Data used by scripts (JavaScript) to perform background tasks. This track is not visible to the user. | Triggering custom interactive elements, showing synchronized slides, or updating overlays at specific timestamps. | --- ## Code Examples ### Example 1: Video with Multiple Subtitle Tracks This example demonstrates a video player with English and Norwegian subtitle tracks. Users can switch between these tracks using the browser's native media player controls. ```html
Your browser does not support the video tag.
``` ### Example 2: Video with Captions and Chapters This example shows how to combine closed captions (for accessibility) and chapters (for navigation) within the same video player. ```html
``` --- ## Important Considerations 1. **The `default` Attribute**: You can add the boolean `default` attribute to one of the `
` elements. This tells the browser to enable that specific track automatically when the video starts playing (e.g., `
`). 2. **Accessibility (WCAG)**: Using `kind="captions"` is crucial for making your web media accessible to deaf and hard-of-hearing users, whereas `kind="subtitles"` is generally reserved for translation purposes. 3. **CORS Requirements**: If your `.vtt` track files are hosted on a different domain than your website, you must configure Cross-Origin Resource Sharing (CORS) on the hosting server and add the `crossorigin` attribute to the `
` or `
` element. 4. **Browser Support**: The `
` element and its `kind` attribute are fully supported in all modern web browsers (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari, and Opera).
