## HTML
`muted` Attribute The `muted` attribute is a boolean attribute used within the HTML `
` element. When present, it specifies that the audio output should be silenced (muted) by default when the page loads. --- ## Introduction The `muted` attribute is particularly useful for improving user experience (UX) and complying with modern browser autoplay policies. Many modern web browsers block media from autoplaying with sound to prevent intrusive user experiences. By combining the `autoplay` and `muted` attributes, you can ensure that your audio or video media plays immediately without violating browser restrictions. --- ## Syntax and Usage ### HTML5 Syntax In HTML5, `muted` is a boolean attribute. You can write it simply as the attribute name itself: ```html
``` ### XHTML Syntax In XHTML, attribute minimization is forbidden. The `muted` attribute must be explicitly defined with its value: ```html
``` --- ## Code Examples ### Basic Example: Muted Audio with Controls The following example demonstrates an audio player that is muted by default when the page loads. The user can manually unmute the audio using the player controls. ```html
Muted Audio Player:
Your browser does not support the audio element.
``` ### Programmatic Control with JavaScript You can also read or modify the muted state of an audio element dynamically using JavaScript's `muted` property. ```html
Your browser does not support the audio element.
Toggle Mute
``` --- ## Browser Support The `muted` attribute is widely supported across all modern web browsers: | Browser | Supported Version | | :--- | :--- | | **Google Chrome** | Yes | | **Mozilla Firefox** | Yes | | **Microsoft Edge** | Yes | | **Safari** | Yes | | **Opera** | Yes | | **Internet Explorer** | IE 10 and above (IE 9 and earlier do not support this attribute) | --- ## Key Considerations * **HTML5 Standard:** The `
` element and its `muted` attribute are new features introduced in HTML5. They are not supported in HTML 4.01. * **Autoplay Policies:** If you want your audio to play automatically using the `autoplay` attribute, most modern browsers (such as Chrome, Safari, and Firefox) require the `muted` attribute to be present. Otherwise, the browser will block the autoplay action until the user interacts with the page. * **User Control:** Even if an audio element starts as muted, users can still unmute it using the default browser controls (if the `controls` attribute is present) or via custom JavaScript controls.
